Today's diverse workforce and customer base presents us with both opportunities and challenges. Diversity offers organizations opportunities to tap into this new growing culture of workers and consumers. However, differences in backgrounds, values, and norms can also result in conflict, disruption, and loss of productivity. While some organizations may understand the need to have their employees be representative of its customer base in order to stay competitive, they may not know how to integrate diversity into the overall business strategy. They may hire more people of color and women, but do not address systems and processes for recruitment, retention, promotion, mentoring and leadership. Success depends largely on how a workforce and customer base is managed.
